We’ve recommended Futbolera: A History of Women and Sports in Latin America by Brenda Elsey and Joshua Nadel in a number of our classes, and students are always grateful we did. As a fútbol-obsessed kid in Mexico, I had no idea that the summer after Pelé won the fabled 1970 World Cup, the Aztec Stadium would once again fill up for a woman’s World Cup. The chapter on that tournament, and the subsequent reasons I might not have heard about it, is a particularly powerful read.
