Sport and Globalization Research Aide

Aoife Kane is an investigative journalism graduate student and Howard Center fellow from Kildare, Ireland. As a reporter and assistant producer, she’s covered sports, politics and news in Ireland, New York City and Washington, D.C. 

She covered the 2024 U.S. presidential election as a broadcast reporter in the Cronkite News Washington Bureau. During her undergraduate degree at Dublin City University, she worked in the sports department of RTÉ, Ireland’s public service broadcaster. She also worked on the 2024 Irish general election for RTÉ.

Playing Gaelic football in Ireland with my best friends. 

Your global sports Mount Rushmore?

Kobe Bryant, Nick Saban, Sir Alex Ferguson, Nelly Korda.  

Which world leader would you put in goal?

Boris Johnson. 

Which athlete would you want to be world leader?

Steph Curry (good under pressure).

Best rivalry?

Man Utd vs Man City. 

A sign that the world of sport is shrinking?

The Pittsburgh Steelers just played a NFL regular season game in Ireland!

Where would the Great Game Lab find the quintessence of global sport?

Charlie Smyth, an Irish kicker for the New Orleans Saints learned his kicking abilities from playing Gaelic football. The NBA MVP for 6 out of the last 7 seasons has been from outside the US.

Question you'd most want to ask other fellows?

Sports are one of the only things that still bring us together. How can we use this to make the world a better place, get people to talk to one another and break down walls?
