El 2022 será un año clave para el geodeporte, la contienda mundial entre diversas potencias explotando al deporte para fortalecer su poder suave (o "soft power" en inglés). Solo hace falta notar que el año abre con la Olimpiada invernal en Beijing, y cierra con el Mundial de Catar, para apreciar lo que está en juego -y, claro, dónde se juega.

In late 2021, Martinez wrote that 2022 would be the year of “geosports,” or sports and geopolitics, beginning with a Beijing-hosted Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games and culminating with Qatar’s winter World Cup.
