Is the United States Still Offside?

Set Piece Live: Is the United States Still Offside?

Book cover

Political Scientists coined the term ‘American Exceptionalism’ to describe the historical absence of  a mass socialist movement in this country. But then a quarter-century ago, the noted political theorist Andrei Markovits co-authored an influential book, Offside: Soccer & American Exceptionalism, that extended this notion of American exceptionalism to the sports Americans play and follow. Today, as the United States is on the verge of co-hosting a FIFA men’s World Cup, the world’s game continues to gain adherents in this country, while America's homegrown sports are growing their overseas followings. With all this sporting convergence, can we still say the United States is “offside”? Join Dr. Markovits, now a Fellow at the Great Game Lab, for a reassessment of his provocative and insightful book 25 years after its publication.
